To provide
an Alternative Energy Solution for 24 hour electrical power to a remote
house near Kielder Forest, Northumberland |
| Existing |
The house
has historically been supplied with electricity from Diesel Engine Generator.
A grid connection would cost in excess of £70000 |
| Solution |
To provide
an Alternative Energy System utilising the natural resources available
at the property. The site is not good for wind as it largely sheltered
from the main prevailing winds, however there is a valley that gives a
wind funnel effect from the North West. A spring supply existed which could
be reasonably easily and cost effectively be piped for a Micro Hydro Turbine.
A south facing roof could be utilised for solar photovoltaic (PV) panels.
All the energy from these sources was channelled into an energy store of
1100Ah of batteries at 24VDC. From this store the electricity to the house
and buildings were supplied through a Charger-Inverter Unit which provides
230VDC “mains” equivalent electricity and also links to the engine generator
to start it automatically to run heavy loads and to charge the batteries
when needed. |
