PUMPING OF CONTAMINATED WATER USING WIND AND SOLAR POWER

    Back to Case Studies

Challenge To provide power & a pump to run water for filtration through a reed-bed to remove heavy metals and contaminants at a Land Reclamation Site in North Lincolnshire on the Humber.
Existing Nearest mains connection was 800 yards away. Overhead lines would not be permitted as next to and RSPB Bird Sanctuary.
Solution A combined wind & solar system with energy storage and a low-energy DC pump which is switched by a timer and a float switch.
Tech Spec - AIR Wind Module - 403 series on free standing 6m mast (no guys)
    - Solar Panel 120Wp with charge controller
    - ELECSOL energy storage
    - 12VDC Slo-Pump providing 13 litres per minute - using only 48 Watts
    - “Reeds-in-a-Bin” by Oceans ESU Ltd.

Result A simple yet effective and low cost solution to provide power for pumping for the “clean up” of contaminated land. An all round excellent environmentally sound solution to a nasty problem.
Specials The system is designed to be in position for several years and then be moved elsewhere. The heavy metals removed by the reed beds will be sent for recycling.
Note No incidence of “bird strike” has yet been recorded - the suspension cables on the Humber Bridge are more of a danger to the wildlife than a small wind turbine.
